Sports Icons Embrace Political Arena as Late-Night Elections Loom
The upcoming twelfth national election is set to unfold, promising a period of five years led by representatives chosen through fair, impartial, and participatory means. This time, the election arena is witnessing the active involvement of several sports stars, transitioning from their field exploits to the world of politics.
At the forefront of this list is Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who successfully contested the national elections in 2018. Nominated once again by the Bangladesh Awami League, Mashrafe is now vying for the Narail-2 parliamentary seat.
Following Mashrafe's lead, cricket sensation Shakib Al Hasan has entered the political fray, contesting from the Magura-2 seat. Despite being a newcomer to politics, Shakib's relentless efforts to win over voters include a promise to transform Magura into a smart city.
While Mashrafe's popularity might not be as pronounced in his area, Shakib appears to face little competition in the electoral field. Additionally, Mashrafe's guardian, BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon, is actively campaigning and is expected to secure victory in Kishoreganj-6, facing minimal opposition.
Another key figure from the BCB, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, is also seeking election from Moulvibazar-2 constituency under the boat symbol as the organizing secretary of the Awami League.
Turning attention to football, Abdus Salam Murshedi, a former national football team player and senior vice-president of BAFUF, is the Awami League's nominated candidate for the Khulna-4 constituency. However, facing a field of nine candidates, voters seem inclined towards fresh faces, considering his limited achievements in the constituency.
Former national football team captain Dewan Shafiul Arefin Tutul is contesting in Manikganj-2 against singer Momtaz and his cousin Dewan Zahid Ahmed. Another former football captain, Arif Khan Joy, is running independently from Netrakona-2 against boatman Ashraf Ali Khan Khosru.
Kazi Nabil Ahmed, a four-time vice-president of BAFOOF and acting director-in-charge of Abahani, is confidently contesting the Jessore-3 seat under the boat symbol, despite facing multiple opponents.
Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan Manik, another vice-president of the Football Federation, is making his debut in active politics as an independent candidate for Noakhali-2.
With many sports figures actively endorsing their preferred candidates, the sports arena is becoming increasingly entwined with the political landscape, even for those not directly participating in the elections. As election day approaches, the anticipation builds to see whose face will bear the widest smile.
