Bangladesh Clinches Historic Victory Over New Zealand in Decisive ODI
Bangladesh faced an uphill battle after losing the first two ODIs in the three-match series against New Zealand, rendering the last match a mere formality. Despite New Zealand's pursuit of a clean sweep, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and team emerged triumphant, conclusively ending the series with a commanding 9-wicket victory in the third and final ODI.
Winning the toss in Napier on Saturday, Bangladesh invited New Zealand to bat. The Bangladeshi pacers dominated, restricting New Zealand to a meager 98 runs in 31.4 overs. Tanjim Hasan Shakib led the charge by claiming early wickets, dismantling the Kiwi batting lineup. Shariful, Shakib, and Soumya each secured three wickets, while Mustafiz added one to the tally. Tanjim proved the most economical, conceding only 2 runs per over.
Chasing the target, Bangladeshi openers Soumya Sarkar and Enamul Haque Vijay provided a solid start. However, Soumya faced issues with her eyes, signaling her inability to see clearly. Despite attempts to address the problem, Soumya had to retire with 4 runs off 16 balls. Captain Shanto, alongside Enamul, orchestrated a crucial 69-run partnership from 50 balls, paving the way for victory. Shanto contributed 51 runs, guiding Bangladesh to a historic win on New Zealand soil.
This triumph marked Bangladesh's breakthrough, ending an 18-match winless streak against New Zealand in ODIs. The red-green team secured their victory with a remarkable 209 balls to spare, etching their names in history with the third-highest margin of victory in the series.
