Chittagong Dominance Continues as Sylhet Stumbles in Bangladesh Premier League
Sylhet Strikers, led by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, faced yet another setback in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of Chittagong Challengers. The match, held at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Monday (January 29) afternoon, saw Chittagong clinch victory by 8 wickets, maintaining their strong position at the top of the table.
Chittagong's commanding performance in the tournament continued as they secured their fourth win out of five matches, accumulating 8 points to lead the standings. Meanwhile, Sylhet's woes persisted as they remained winless in all four matches, languishing at the bottom of the table without any points to their name this season.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sylhet Strikers struggled to make an impact, posting a modest total of 134 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. In response, Chittagong's openers Tanjid Hasan Tamim and Tom Bruce led the charge with unbeaten half-centuries, guiding their team to victory with ease at 138 runs in just 17.4 overs, losing only 2 wickets in the process.
Chittagong's pursuit of the target got off to a strong start, with Avishka Fernando and Tanjid Hasan Tamim laying a solid foundation by scoring 23 runs in the initial 3 overs. Despite losing Fernando early to a short ball from Tanjim Shakib, Tamim and Bruce formed a formidable partnership, adding 89 runs for the second wicket to steer Chittagong towards victory.
Tamim, who notched up a fifty off 39 balls, and Bruce, making his BPL debut, showcased their batting prowess as they chased down the target comfortably, with Bruce also reaching his fifty in his maiden BPL appearance. Sylhet's bowlers struggled to contain the duo, conceding the match with 14 balls to spare.
In their innings, Sylhet faced early setbacks as Mohammad Mithun and Nazmul Hossain Shanto fell quickly, leaving the team in a precarious position. However, contributions from Harry Tector, Zakir Hasan, and Ryan Burl provided some resistance, but it wasn't enough to set a challenging target for Chittagong.
Bilal Khan starred with the ball for Chittagong, claiming three crucial wickets, while Nihaduzzaman contributed with one wicket, helping their team secure a comprehensive victory and extend Sylhet's winless streak in the tournament.
