ICC Relocates Under-19 World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa Amid Cricket Board Controversy
The Under-19 World Cup, originally scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka early next year 2024, has undergone a change in venue. The International Cricket Council (ICC) was compelled to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka, with the new destination being South Africa. This decision was reached during an emergency board meeting convened by the ICC on Tuesday. The Youth World Cup is now slated to occur from January 13 to February 4.
Following Sri Lanka's disappointing performance against India in the World Cup, Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ransinghe took decisive action by dismissing the entire Cricket Board (SLC). The interim committee assumed responsibility, although the court later reinstated the previous board. Despite this, the ICC imposed a ban on Sri Lankan cricket last Friday, citing government interference in administration as the cause. The SLC now finds itself in a precarious situation due to this ban, leading to the relocation of the Youth World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa.
In response to the Sri Lankan government's interference, the ICC board hastily convened an emergency meeting last Friday. During this meeting, consensus was reached that Sri Lankan cricket faced significant risks, especially in terms of maintaining independence. The ICC subsequently issued a statement, asserting that Sri Lanka Cricket had violated crucial regulations as a member. Notably, cricket administration was expected to be free from government interference. The ICC specified that the ban on Sri Lankan cricket would be lifted once the stipulated conditions were met.
