In a historic achievement, the Bangladesh women's cricket team not only set a record for the highest run score in One Day International (ODI) cricket but also established a new benchmark for the largest margin of victory by defeating South Africa by 131 runs. This remarkable feat surpassed their previous record of an 82-run victory against Ireland in 2011. The achievement unfolded on Saturday night when the team, led by Niger Sultana, displayed their prowess at Buffalo Park in East London.
Wearing the iconic red-green jerseys, the Bangladeshi squad showcased their dominance by amassing a formidable total of 250 runs against South Africa's bowling attack, marking the highest ODI score in the country's history. The hosts' batters struggled in vain against the relentless onslaught, ultimately succumbing to the Bangladeshi bowlers.
The Proteas were bowled out for a mere 131 runs, with Nahid, Rabeya, Fahima, and Sultana orchestrating a whirlwind of dismissals. The Bangladeshi bowlers exhibited exceptional skill, and South Africa's total could have been even lower if not for the resilient efforts of Elise Marie Marks, who contributed the highest innings with 35 runs. Sune Luce, the team's middle-order batsman, added 31 runs to the total.
Among the Bangladeshi bowlers, Nahida Akhtar stood out with three wickets, while Sultana, Rabeya, and Fahima claimed two wickets each. Pacer Marufa also contributed with a wicket.
Earlier in the match, Bangladesh, after losing the toss, was invited to bat. Left-handed batsman Murshida Khatun played a pivotal role in achieving the record innings total of 250 runs for the loss of three wickets. The opening partnership between Shamima Sultana and Farzana Haque set the tone by scoring 66 runs. Shamima departed after contributing 34 runs off 48 balls, while Farzana, though a bit slower, added 35 runs.
Murshida continued to anchor the innings, forming an 80-run partnership with Nigar Sultana. Nigar contributed 38 runs before being caught by Mlaba. Murshida, who reached a half-century in 60 balls, missed out on a century, concluding her innings at 91 runs off 100 balls, adorned with 12 fours. Anindya Sundar played a crucial innings of 91 runs, and an unbroken partnership of 59 runs between Swarna Akter and Murshida sealed Bangladesh's historic victory.
