Nazmul Hasan Papon Appointed as Bangladesh's Sports Minister After 33 Years
After a 33-year gap, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has finally welcomed a full-fledged minister. Nazmul Hasan Papon, President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and newly elected Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-6, has been entrusted with the nation's sports portfolio. This marks the first time since 1990 that the ministry has had a complete minister.
Speculations surrounding Nazmul Hasan Papon's potential role as the Sports Minister turned into reality with his official appointment. Following the evening oath-taking ceremony at Bangabhaban in the presence of President Sahabuddin, it was confirmed that the head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board is now at the helm of the sports arena.
Addressing concerns about his dual roles, Nazmul Hasan Papon clarified that his ministerial position has no impact on his role at the BCB. He expressed his intent to resign from the BCB, a decision he had contemplated before his ministerial tenure, which is set to conclude next year.
This isn't the first instance of someone concurrently serving as BCB president and minister. Previous examples include Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, who managed both roles simultaneously in the past.
Nazmul Hasan Papon, not only overseeing the BCB but also holding responsibilities within the International Cricket Council (ICC), faces complexities in relinquishing his BCB role early. He highlighted the challenges posed by ICC regulations, emphasizing his commitment to completing responsibilities within the prescribed timeline, possibly even before the current term concludes.
