Historic Moment as Female Umpire Takes Charge of Bangladesh Match
In a historic breakthrough, Kim Cotton, a female umpire, has etched her name in cricket history by officiating in Bangladesh's second T20I match against New Zealand at Mt Maunganui. While male umpires are a common sight in women's cricket, the reverse is seldom true in men's international cricket. Cotton, a 45-year-old Kiwi, previously made history by umpiring in ICC full-member team matches, serving as the field umpire in the New Zealand-Sri Lanka match in April.
Her recent feat marks the first instance of a female umpire officiating in any Bangladesh match across all editions. Notably, in the 732 international matches prior to this, Bangladesh had not been assigned a woman umpire.
It's worth mentioning that Claire Polosak was the first woman to officiate a match in men's cricket, achieving this milestone in 2019 during the Oman-Namibia ODI match. The 35-year-old Australian also holds the distinction of being the first match official in men's Test cricket, serving as the fourth umpire in the India-Australia Test in Sydney in 2022.
