No one else in the history of Indian Test cricket could achieve this feat before him.
Before Ashwin, Bhagwat Subramania Chandrasekhar took the highest wicket of 95 in 38 innings. Anil Kumble took 92 wickets in 36 innings. Bishan Singh Bedi took 85 wickets in 36 innings. And Kapil Dev took 85 wickets in 48 innings.
