Erasmus announced his retirement from umpiring to cricket-related website Cricbuzz. The 60-year-old South African said, 'I took the decision in October last year. I have also informed the ICC that I am not staying when my contract expires in April.
With the retirement of Erasmus, the number of umpires on the ICC Elite Panel has reduced to 11. Adrian Holdstock remained the only South African.
Erasmus won the ICC Umpire of the Year Award (David Shepherd Trophy) in 2016, 2017 and 2021. Explaining how challenging the profession is, he said, 'While doing this work, the most challenging thing to do is to make the right decision. It is always difficult and special. It feels good to do the job properly.
