IPL Introduces New Bowling Rules for 2024 Season
The IPL is set to undergo rule changes for the upcoming season, building on innovations from the previous year, such as the 'Impact Player' rule. The latest adjustment pertains to bouncer regulations, with bowlers now permitted to deliver two bouncers per over starting from 2024.
This modification was initially trialed in India's domestic T20 tournament, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and is now being incorporated into the playing conditions of the IPL. While the ICC Playing Conditions for T20 Internationals allow one bouncer or shoulder-height short ball per over, the IPL has opted to raise the limit to two, providing bowlers with an added tactical advantage.
Indian pacer Jaydev Unadkat, who fetched the highest price in the IPL auction, sees the two-bouncer allowance as a significant benefit for bowlers. He remarked, "I think two bouncers in the over will be very useful, and I believe this will give bowlers an advantage."
In addition to the new bouncer rule, the 'Impact Player' regulation remains in place. This rule allows a player from outside the XI to be introduced at any point during the match. Four players are designated as impact substitutes at the toss, and one can be substituted per match. However, if there are four foreign players remaining in the XI, an Indian player must be selected as the impact replacement.
Despite the yet-to-be-announced schedule for the franchise-based A league due to national elections in India, it is anticipated that the league, featuring 10 teams, will take place from March 22 to the end of May.
