New Leadership for Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe Series
Sri Lanka is set to witness a change in leadership during the upcoming T20 and ODI series against Zimbabwe. Dasun Shanaka, following the World Cup disappointment, is no longer at the helm. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has appointed Wanindu Hasaranga as the captain for the T20 series and Kushal Mendis for the ODI series.
The T20 and ODI series, commencing on January 6 at home, will showcase a revamped leadership. Charith Asalanka will serve as the deputy captain in both formats, adding strength to the team's leadership.
In a comeback after missing the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup due to injury, Hasaranga is poised to make his mark in international cricket once again. Meanwhile, despite stepping down as captain, Shanaka remains in contention for the series, with his inclusion in the initial squad. Whether he secures a spot in the final team remains uncertain.
Hasaranga, an experienced all-rounder, previously led a team in the Lankan Premier League, bringing leadership skills to the fore. On the other hand, Mendis, who filled in during Shanaka's injury in the World Cup, now takes on the permanent role of captaincy as a wicket-keeper batsman.
After a disappointing ODI World Cup, where Sri Lanka finished ninth among ten teams, the team is undergoing a reset. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board recently formed a new selection committee, headed by former opener Upul Tharanga, with support from former cricketers Ajanta Mendis and Sanath Jayasuriya. The changes reflect a fresh start for Sri Lanka in their cricketing journey.
