Mitchell Starc Surpasses Cummins in Record IPL Auction Deal
The ongoing IPL auction has been a spectacle of record-breaking fees, with Pat Cummins initially becoming the most expensive player in the tournament's history. However, this record was short-lived as Australian pacer Mitchell Starc has now set a new benchmark, surpassing his teammate.
In the 2024 IPL auction, Kolkata Knight Riders secured Starc for a staggering 24 crore 75 lakh rupees. The bidding war for this star pacer, with a base price of Rs 2 crore, saw intense competition from Gujarat Titans. Ultimately, the two-time champions, Kolkata, emerged victorious in the longstanding rivalry between the two teams during the auction.
Cummins, initially the talk of the auction, was sought after by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Eventually, the 2016 season champion Sunrisers Hyderabad secured his services for 20 crore 50 lakh rupees. However, Cummins' record-breaking deal was swiftly overshadowed by another World Cup winner, Starc.
The previous record for the highest-paid Indian and foreigner belonged to English pace bowling all-rounder Sam Curran before the record-breaking developments in this auction. In the last auction, Curran was bought by Kings XI Punjab for 18.5 million rupees.
Starc, who made his IPL debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 and played for the team in the following season, has returned to the IPL stage after a hiatus. Despite being bought by Kolkata in the 2018 mega auction for Rs 9.40 lakh, he didn't play due to injury. This time around, Kolkata has once again secured his services.
