Chile has been a formidable opponent for Argentina, notably thwarting their championship aspirations in the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa America. On both occasions, Chile clinched victory in the finals through tiebreakers, preventing Lionel Messi from securing the coveted international trophy. As fate would have it, Argentina finds itself once again pitted against Chile in the 2024 Copa America group stage.
Chile emerges as Argentina's historical rival in the upcoming Copa America group stage
With aspirations of defending their title in the United States next year, Argentina is gearing up for a challenging tournament featuring 16 teams, including 10 from South America and six from the CONCACAF region. The opening match for Argentina is set to take place in Atlanta on June 20, with their opponent determined by the winners of the playoffs between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. Five days later, Messi's squad will face Chile in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they last clashed in the 2016 Centenary Copa America final. In that encounter, Messi, unfortunately, couldn't find the net in the tiebreaker, temporarily bidding farewell to international football after the match before reversing his decision.
Having met in the group stage on their way to previous championships, Argentina and Chile's encounters have been closely contested. In the upcoming tournament, Brazil, who suffered defeat at the hands of Argentina in the 2021 final, faces a formidable Group D comprising Colombia, Paraguay, and the winners of the playoff between Costa Rica and Honduras. Brazil's campaign kicks off on June 24 against the victors of the Costa Rica-Honduras playoff, followed by a match against Paraguay on June 28.
The reigning world champions will conclude their Group A fixtures on June 29 against Peru, with the match set to unfold on the turf of Messi's club, Inter Miami. Other noteworthy groups include Group B, featuring Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica alongside Mexico, while Group C comprises Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia with host nation USA.
If Argentina secures the top spot in Group A, they will enter the quarter-finals against the runners-up of Group B on July 4. The first semi-final is scheduled for July 9 in East Rutherford, followed by the last semi-final in Charlotte on the next day. The title showdown will unfold in Miami on July 14.
